Using Tap to Pay on iPhone

Tap to Pay on iPhone is an easy way to enable users to accept payments directly on compatible iPhones. With Tap to Pay on iPhone, your business and customer data are protected by the security and privacy features built into the iPhone, and Apple does not store card numbers on devices or on Apple servers.

To process a payment using 'Tap to Pay on iPhone'


Go to 'Settings' and turn on 'Tap to Pay on iPhone'
Tap "+" and select the payment type you would like to process and enter the amount and description
Tap 'Tap to Pay on iPhone' and a screen like the one shown below will be displayed.
Have the user tap their card/phone/watch on the device and hold it there until the payment is processed.
A payment confirmation screen will be displayed and you're ready to move on to your next customer.

Note: When processing a payment using Tap to Pay on iPhone for the first time, there will be some steps to follow to enable Tap to Pay on your Apple account. Once these have been completed you will be able to then process the payment. This will only be required once.

Contactless payment cards


Accept contactless debit and credit cards with Tap to Pay on iPhone. To confirm if your customer has a contactless card, look for the EMV® Contactless Indicator on the back or the front of the card.
To accept a contactless card, present your iPhone to the customer and ask the customer to hold their card horizontally on the tap area for a few seconds until done.


Apple Pay on iPhone


To accept Apple Pay, present your iPhone to the customer and ask the customer to hold their iPhone near the tap area until done.


Apple Pay on Apple Watch


To accept Apple Pay on Apple Watch, present your iPhone to the customer and ask the customer to hold their Apple Watch near the tap area until done.


Other digital wallets and wearables


With Tap to Pay on iPhone, merchants can also accept payments from other digital wallets and wearables that enable contactless transactions.
To accept payments from these devices, ask the customer to hold the paying device near the tap area of your iPhone until done.

iOS v16.4 or above is required


If you encounter an error message like the one displayed below, this is indicating that your device is running an older version of iOS and because Tap to Pay on iPhone requires iOS 16.4 or above, you will need to update your device to a newer version of iOS to utilise this functionality.
